Simplifies Collaboration between Students and Faculty While Reducing Information Security Risks and Network Bandwidth Issues
Palo Alto, Calif. — January 29, 2008 Accellion, Inc. (www.accellion.com),the leading provider of on-demand secure file transfer solutions for enterprise users, today announced a global education initiative that offers free user licenses to university students anywhere in the world. Through this initiative, Accellion will provide free user licenses to students at universities and educational institutions that license the Accellion Secure File Transfer Solution for their faculty and staff.
Extending the Accellion Secure File Transfer solution to students provides them with a fast and easy way to collaborate with faculty, staff and other students on academic work. It also minimizes the impact large file transfers have on the school's email network and reduces information security risks associated with the use of unsecure electronic file transfer workarounds such as FaceBook, MySpace, IM and P2P.
Accellion's education initiative was developed in response to requests from universities to simplify the traditionally cumbersome process of transferring large files, not only by faculty but between faculty and students. Pepperdine University has seen first-hand the many benefits offered through Accellion's Secure File Transfer solution and is extending its initial faculty and staff deployment to now include its student population without added cost. By implementing the Accellion solution, Pepperdine has simplified the process of sharing data electronically, reduced storage costs, increased performance of messaging servers, and now has the ability to track and audit all data entering and leaving the University networks.
"After realizing the substantial benefits gained by the Accellion solution, we were determined to find a way to extend these same benefits to our students," said Dr. Timothy Chester, chief information officer, Pepperdine University. "In addition to further reducing the impact large file transfers have on our network, we are making it much easier for our students to collaborate with each other and faculty. We consider this a significant technical and academic advantage for Pepperdine and its students."
"Ever-increasing file sizes and large email attachments are negatively impacting nearly every industry, and academic institutions are no exception. If not properly managed, the electronic transfer of large files can have serious consequences on both network security and performance," said Yorgen Edholm, president and CEO of Accellion. "This education initiative was designed to help universities address related issues proactively while significantly improving real-time communications between faculty, staff and students looking to share research data, exchange reports and advance academic ideas."
