Accellion Sets the Standard for Government Security for Mobile File Sharing

Innovative New Mobile Productivity Features Include Security of 256 bit FIPS 140-2 Certified Encryption and FedRAMP Approved Hosting Facility

Palo Alto, CA – July 24, 2013 –

Accellion, Inc., the pioneer in providing enterprise-class, secure mobile file sharing solutions, today announced that it has received Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2 certification for their cryptographic module. The module now extends coverage to AES 256 bit encryption to Accellion's newly introduced mobile productivity features. Accellion is the only vendor in its market offering this highest level of secure government software certification for online file sharing and mobile productivity software.

A pioneer in the online file sharing space, Accellion has been utilizing FIPS 140-2 certified encryption for three years and was the first in the market to do so. The re-certification covers innovative new functionality added since the solution’s last certification. A standard developed by the US federal government for use in computer systems, FIPS 140-2 addresses the encryption requirements for non-military government agencies and vendors and is overseen by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

Given the sensitivity of government information and files, federal regulations mandate the use of FIPS140-2 certified encryption for data in transit to meet government standards. In support of the government’s new Mobile Computing Decision Framework, which outlines ways for agencies to develop safer mobile products for use on government networks, Accellion now ensures its customers can enable mobile productivity for all workers while ensuring data security within federal regulations.

“The rise of BYOD and ever-increasing security concerns mean we need new mobile features and capabilities from our vendors,” said Carl Scarbrough, senior project manager of strategy and emerging technologies for the Tennessee Valley Authority. “Accellion’s FIPS 140-2 certification gave us the peace of mind to know that content shared on mobile devices is protected, and compliant with regulatory standards. Because of this, we are in the process of deploying mobile productivity solutions from Accellion, to enable our employees to work remotely and to better collaborate with TVA’s external business partners.”

Although federal standards, such as FIPS 140-2 certification, were created for government agencies and contractors, corporations are also beginning to seek such government-level security due to the increasing prevalence of mobile security incidents. According to a recent survey by security company Check Point, nearly 80 percent of organizations have experienced some kind of mobile security incident in the past year. Of those, more than 60 percent experienced $100,000 or more in financial losses from that incident.

“We understand that enterprise security and government regulatory needs can shift rapidly, so we simply must be qualified to meet our customers’ needs,” said Yorgen Edholm, CEO of Accellion. “We’re bringing innovative, new software solutions to market, and regularly make sure we’re compliant to the highest standards of any regulatory body. Accellion is raising the bar for enterprise security and mobile productivity, and our FIPS recertification extends our compliance even more broadly.”

In addition to the recertification of the newer encryption module, Accellion can also be deployed in a FedRAMP approved facility for customers choosing its hosted solution. FedRAMP is a U.S. government-wide program that provides a standardized approach to security assessment, authorization, and continuous monitoring for cloud products and services.

Government agencies around the globe, including the United States Senate; NASA; US Securities and Exchange Commission; National Institutes of Health; London Fire Brigade; National Institute of Standards and Technologies; Canadian Union of Professional Employees; Texas Juvenile Justice Department; City of Canterbury; Financial Services Commission of Ontario and the London Borough of Camden use Accellion for their secure file sharing, syncing, and mobile productivity needs.
