Palo Alto, California – August 5, 2009 — Accellion, Inc. today announced that its managed file transfer solution has achieved Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) 140-2 Level 2 certification from the Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The certification assures federal, state, and local agencies that the information they share via the Accellion Managed File Transfer FIPS Certified Appliance is done so in a manner that meets the NIST’s strict security and compliance guidelines.
In response to a growing number of data breaches resulting from unsecure peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing usage within the governement space, the House and Government Reform Committee is seeking a bill to formally ban the use of P2P file sharing applications on government and contractor networks. This action follows the Defense Department’s decision to ban thumb drives due to security concerns.
As the current administration places greater emphasis on cybersecurity, government agencies are faced with the difficult challenge of how to foster collaboration while maintaining the highest level of security. Accellion Managed File Transfer offers a secure and compliant way for public and private sectors to share information while preventing data leakage at the file transfer source.
“Accellion is providing a means for government agencies to overcome the hurdles that have stalled electronic collaboration,” said Yorgen Edholm, president and CEO of Accellion. “Our easy to use file transfer solution does more than just encrypt data in motion; it provides the additional layers of security that government agencies require including authentication and comprehensive file tracking and reporting capabilities for true end-to-end file transfer security.”
FIPS 140-2 Level 2 certification ensures government agencies within the US and Canada that the cryptographic-based security devices within Accellion’s Managed File Transfer solution are capable of protecting sensitive information through both physical and digital safeguards. FIPS 140-2 Level 2 certification covers both the hardware and software aspects of the Accellion Appliance and ensures that not only the software/firmware offers best-in-class security but also the physical security conforms to the highest possible security standards.
