Accellion Releases Courier Standard Appliance and Enterprise Appliance: FTP Alternatives for Secure Large File Transfer

Corporate Customers Deploy Accellion's Secure File Transfer Appliance for Ad Hoc, Compliant, Low IT Burden File Transfers

Palo Alto, Calif. – May 23, 2005 –

Accellion, Inc., a pioneer in secure file transfer and attachment offload solutions, today announced the availability of two new versions of its flagship product, Accellion Courier Standard Appliance and Accellion Courier Enterprise Appliance. In response to market demand for secure, low administrative alternatives to file transfer methods such as FTP and e-mail, Accellion now provides two versions of its popular File Transfer Appliance (FTA) solution.

  • Accellion Courier Standard File Transfer Appliance, designed for single site and medium to high volume users, makes sending files as easy as web-based e-mail while offering end-to-end file security and policy-based automatic file lifecycle management.
  • Accellion Courier Enterprise File Transfer Appliance, designed for multi-site and high volume users, is a full-featured, enterprise product that, in addition to the features available in the Standard Appliance, supports plug-in integration with Outlook and Lotus clients as well as clustering for multi-site load balancing, intelligent replication and failover.

With this latest release, organizations of all sizes can increase productivity and reduce administrative overhead with Accellion's cost effective and secure file transfer appliances.

"The current regulatory environment is causing corporate executives to examine day-to-day operations to ensure immediate management of litigious risk," commented Brian Babineau, analyst with Enterprise Strategy Group, a Milford, MA based IT analyst firm. "All of the regulation mandates focus on information security and privacy, and emphasize the need for superior business process control and resource management. IT organizations must align with executive requirements and gain control of regulatory resources. Electronic mail is certainly one of those resources that pose a litigious risk. Products, such as Accellion's FTA Courier, can help IT companies regain and remain in control of the resources consumed by email."

Businesses require ad hoc and instantaneous sharing of information to stay competitive. With applications that generate massive amounts of data and the global reach of business operations, conventional solutions for sending large files fall well short of today's needs. FTP and CD burning are costly and do not meet the internal audit requirements of most businesses or government mandates such as Sarbanes-Oxley 404 compliance. Accellion's FTA introduces a cost effective solution for these concerns.

"Accellion Courier FTA offers both web-only and integrated solutions to address the IT problem of managing large file transport," said Yorgen Edholm, chief executive officer of Accellion. "Our customers in production, advertising and other highly collaborative businesses are able to eliminate FTP servers and stop CD burning for file transporting. With Accellion Courier, IT managers can pick and choose the most appropriate set of features between the Standard FTA and Enterprise FTA ,while retaining the option of a seamless upgrade as the business needs grow."

Accellion Courier End-User Features

  • Web-based UI
Accellion Courier has an intuitive Web interface that requires no training. It also allows for company branding through the use of skins.
  • Address book integration (thru LDAP)
Users can address a message by selecting from their corporate address book.
  • Guaranteed download receipt for audit control
When a recipient downloads the file, a return receipt is generated to the sender. The recipient is unaware of the return receipt and cannot turn it off.
  • External send back
External users can use Accellion Courier to send large files back to the company with the same level of security.
  • End-to-end file transport security
Files are replicated, uploaded, and downloaded through secure links and recipients are authenticated. This ensures that only the intended recipients can access the file and users can view and track files sent.
  • Integration with e-mail (Enterprise Appliance only)
An attach button can be integrated via plug-in into a Microsoft Outlook or IBM Lotus Notes client, so files can be sent directly from e-mail.
  • Support for multi-site/appliance architecture (Enterprise Appliance only)
Enterprise FTA supports multi-site configuration where each site needs the capacity to deal with high volume usage as well as the need to replicate files across sites as a fail-over measure.

Accellion Courier Administrative Features

  • Easy to install and maintain appliance
As an appliance that incorporates the hardware, operating system and software into a single rack-able box, it is a plug-in/setup/forget solution.
  • Web-based administration
A Web-based administrative console enables easy set up as well as access to system performance and usage reports.
  • Directory services authentication
LDAP and Active Directory can be used for auto replication (if multiple appliances are used), authentication, and to determine the location of the recipient.
  • Administrative and system reporting
File-level analysis enables tracking, forecasting, allocation, recovery and management of storage and bandwidth costs.
  • File auditing and tracking
An auditable record can be maintained to track when recipients download files. This can be summarized by individual recipient name, file name, time and date
